2014 Chimney Tops Trail Volunteer Workdays

The next phase of the reconstruction of the Chimney Tops Trail is due to begin in May. The Chimney Tops Trail is one of the iconic trails in Great Smoky Mountains National Park. This 2.0 mile trail is one of the most popular trails in the park because of its length and the spectacular views from the top. This trail rehabilitation project will stabilize and improve the trail conditions to protect the resources and enhance the visitor's experience.

The Chimney Tops Trail will be closed Mondays through Thursdays from May 5th through October 16th while the trail work is in progress.

Volunteers will work to complete a variety of trail rehabilitation tasks - you need to be physically able to hike to the worksite and perform manual labor for a 10 hour day. The worksite is about 1.5 miles up from the trailhead. On standard workdays there is a limit of 4 volunteers for each of the Wednesday workdays. If you have a group larger than 4, we may be able to arrange a for a larger volunteer capacity on a Wednesday workday, with advanced notice. Any interested volunteers must signed up in advance as well as complete and return paperwork prior to arriving to volunteer with the crew. Once you sign up and secure a spot for one of the workdays, you will receive more details.
